US Bathroom Vanity Sizes: Nominal Inches, Exact Dimensions and Installation Fit
Width labels such as 24, 30, 36, 48, 60 and 72 inches are useful shopping classes, but they are not installation drawings. A controlled shortlist records the actual cabinet, countertop and basin dimensions, plumbing zone, wall condition, door or drawer travel and supplied components for the exact model.
Use the inch label to shortlist, then approve the exact drawing
A model advertised as 36 inches may be a rounded merchandising class. The cabinet body, countertop and basin can have different finished widths, depths and heights. Keep the nominal class in sales copy, but place exact inches and millimetres in the quotation, drawing and product data. That prevents a rounded label from becoming a site-fit assumption.
| Nominal class | Common planning use | What must still be confirmed |
|---|---|---|
| 24–30 in | Powder rooms and compact bathrooms | Usable basin, faucet clearance, storage and door swing |
| 36 in | Single-basin residential programs | Actual width, countertop overhang and plumbing zone |
| 48 in | Larger single-basin layouts | Basin position, drawer divisions and wall clearance |
| 60–72 in | Large single or double-basin schedules | One or two basins, faucet centers, support and delivery access |
These are planning classes rather than universal standards. The selected model drawing remains authoritative.
Check width, depth and finished height as a system
Width
Measure between finished walls and include tolerances, baseboard, door trim and countertop projection. For wall-to-wall runs, agree filler or scribe allowances rather than ordering to the rough opening.
Depth
Confirm the cabinet body, countertop and hardware projection. Open drawers and doors in the floor plan and check circulation, toilet and shower-door conflicts.
Height
State whether the height includes the countertop and basin. Wall-mounted vanities add a mounting elevation decision; vessel basins can change the usable rim height substantially.
Services and wall support
Overlay supply, waste, trap and shutoff positions on the internal drawing. Verify wall construction, blocking and fastener design with the project professional or installer.

Frequently asked questions
Is 900 mm exactly 36 inches?
No. 900 mm is approximately 35.4 inches. If it is merchandised in a 36-inch class, the actual dimension should remain prominent and consistent.
Does a larger vanity always provide more usable storage?
No. Basin position, trap clearance, drawer construction and internal partitions determine usable capacity.
